NUCAP - Núcleo de Capacitação para a Paz (Caregiver Mothers Project)
The “Mães que Cuidam” [Caregiver Mothers] project aims to ensure the regular contact between mothers deprived of their liberty for involvement in crimes, and their minor children, in an environment separated from the prison. This initiative allows us to be able to ensure the fundamental rights of children and adolescents in meetings attended with their mothers, thus healthily promoting the maintenance of family integration. Founded in June 2010, the NUCAP – Núcleo de Capacitação Para a Paz [Training Center for Peace] is a non-governmental organization that works by spreading a culture of peace. It has several projects that seek to rescue the
family life destroyed by acts of violence. The "Mães que Cuidam” project, for example, provides the physical space at NUCAP, similar to a house, so that sentenced mothers can meet their children outside the prison environment. In addition to this, it carries out works in partnership, aiding in the treatment and recovery of drug addicts and providing services in the areas of social work, psychology and health. The work of the organization was recognized nationally in 2012 when it won the "Innovare Award”, granted by Innovare Institute, linked to the National Council of Justice. In 2013, the "Fantastic" program, of Rede Globo, broadcasted a well illustrated report that described the
benefits of the project and showed the work developed by the entity that has the support of Porto Seco Sul de Minas and with the participation of judges, members of the State and Federal Attorney’s Office and Public Defenders.
